Tiến Lên Rules

More than just a card game, a national pastime

The game is played with 4 players and counter clockwise. The round starts with the 3 ♠, then the winner of the previous turn can start the next one.

Each player starts with 13 cards and tries to get rid of all your cards before the others. Scores are cumulated over rounds (in winning order: 10, 5, -5, -10 points).

Rank: 3 < 4 < 5 < … < A < 2 (2 is highest)

Suits: ♠ < ♣ < ♦ < ♥ (used only to break ties between same rank)

Combinations: single, double, triple, quadriple or a sequence of 3+ cards

The first player sets the combination for the turn.

The next player follows with a similar combination of a higher rank, or pass for the turn.

Special Combos That Beat 2s: (5 points for each black & 10 points for each red 2)

  • A Double Sequence of 3+ pairs can beat a Single 2
  • A Four of a Kind can beat a double 2
  • A Four-pair sequence (3-3-4-4-5-5-6-6) can beat a Pair of 2s even if you passed

Higher special combos can be played on the top of another while respecting the above order, increasing the cost by 10.

If the loosing player still carry a 2 in his hand, he pays the cost per 2 mentioned above to the 3rd player.

Death combos (20 points from defeated players to the winner):

  • If a player starts the round with the four 2 in his hand
  • If a player starts the round with a sequence from 3 to A
  • If a player starts the round with 6 doubles
  • If a player starts the round with a five-pair sequence

The round is over, cards can be delt again for a new round and the holder of 3 ♠ is playing first.
